Is Fort Myers Good for Family Vacation?

Whether you have young kids or teens – if you’re planning a family vacation, here’s a look at just some of the wonderful things to do in Fort Myers, FL with your family.

Soak up the Sand and Surf

A trip to Fort Myers wouldn’t be complete without spending some time at the beautiful beach. With 7 miles of sandy shoreline, the barrier island of Fort Myers is home to some of the most stunning beaches the state of Florida has to offer.

The water temperature of the Gulf Coast is pleasant much of the year, and the white, powdery sand is simply stunning. You and your family will love combing the beach for seashells and beach glass, splashing in the crystal-clear water, or just lying out on a blanket and soaking up the sun.

If you prefer more action, there are plenty of water activities to partake in around Fort Myers Beach. From stand-up paddle boarding to boat tours and jet ski rentals, there are tons of opportunities to get out on the water and enjoy the beaches of Fort Myers.

Search for Dolphins

The water surrounding the barrier island is teeming with marine life, including plenty of dolphins. There’s truly nothing more enchanting than seeing playful dolphins in their natural habitat. You and your family can do just that in Fort Myers.

There are lots of dolphin-watching cruises that set out to sea in Fort Myers. This cruise is certain to leave you speechless. Chances are we’ll see turtles, dolphins, manatees, and maybe even an eagle ray.

Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation

Head back to basics by spending time in nature at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s nature preserves. These public preserves include:

  • Bob Wigley
  • Bailey Homestead
  • Periwinkle
  • Erick Lindblad
  • Sanibel Gardens Preserves

Whichever conservation center you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to soak up the dense, lush greenery of the native flora. Take a self-guided tour along the trails, or sign up for one of the tours led by professional trail guides. There’s even the opportunity to get up close and personal with fauna in its natural habitats, such as birds and turtles.

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens

Children, teens, and adults alike will love exploring the beauty of the natural world around them at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. This non-profit zoo is one of the best zoos in the nation, and it does some wonderful rehabilitation and preservation work, too.

The Naples Zoo is home to dozens of species of animals, such as sloths and clouded leopards, pythons, and tons of various species of mammals, reptiles, and birds. There’s even a giraffe-feeding encounter and other special events throughout the year!

Manatee Park

Hands down, Manatee Park is one of the coolest places in Fort Myers, if not all of Florida. Situated on Palm Beach Boulevard, Manatee Park is a natural refuge for these friendly, gentle marine animals. Since it’s a natural refuge, you’ll encounter wild manatees in their natural habitat.

Winter is the best time of year to see the manatees, and the only cost is a nominal parking fee. If you want to get up close and personal with the manatees, rent a kayak at the Manatee Kayaking Company.
